Hello, and welcome to science class! I am so excited to have you in my class. This year you will explore topics in both Earth and Life science, but more importantly, you will learn valuable science skills. You will be doing labs, activities, projects, online learning, and STEM challenges as you learn to “think like a scientist”. It’s going to be a great year!
Classroom Behavior Expectations: My class expectations are based on behaviors that will help you be successful in school (and later in life). They are:
We also follow the Hurricane Code in class. We practice:
Students who are not meeting the class expectations, or who are not following the Hurricane Code, will receive the following consequences:
Private conference with teacher
Behavior reflection form
Materials: Please bring the following to class each day:
Science notebook (can be spiral or composition style)
Pen or pencil / eraser or whiteout
Pocket folder or something to hold loose pages
Earbuds for listening to science videos
Technology: Chromebooks will be used most days. Please make sure you charge it every night. When you are using the Chromebook, you should only be on science sites as directed by the teacher. Inappropriate use of the Chromebook may result in loss of computer privileges.
Cell phones should be turned off and stored in backpacks. There will be times when cell phones are used in class, but that should happen only with explicit teacher instructions or permission.
Online Resources: The class website is dupreescience.com . You will use this site most days. It is where you will find the daily objective, class activities, homework instructions, flipped videos, and all documents/resources that you will use each day.
We also have a Google Classroom site. You will use this site primarily for turning in electronic work. Assignment due dates will also be posted on Google Calendar.
Absences and Makeup Work: If you are absent, please check the class website to see what you missed. (Sometimes, you can make up the work yourself.) Please see me if you need to get any assignment materials or if you need to make up a lab or other special activity.
You will have one makeup day for each day that you are absent. If you miss a quiz or a test, see me to schedule a time to take the makeup. It must be done within one week of the absence.
Grades: You will be graded on total points earned in the following weighted categories:
Classwork, notebook, labs, mini quizzes, minor projects (formative): 50%
Homework (formative): 15%
Quizzes, tests, and summative projects (summative): 25%
Tutoring / Test Review: I am available after school until 4:00 most days. I can also be available before school (after 8:00 am) or during lunch upon request (at least one day advance notice please). I usually do reviews before quizzes and tests. If you are struggling in class, please come see me before the quiz or test! I want you to be successful and I am here to help.
Contact: If you have any questions or problems, you can email me at my Gilbert Schools email address.
