Unit 1: Introduction to Genetics

Unit Overview:  In this unit, you will explore the similarities and differences between parents and offspring.  You will use models to investigate different phenomena as you develop an explanation for genetic variation among organisms.

Enduring Question:  How are organisms of the same kind different from each other and how might this help a species survive?

Cross-Cutting Concepts: 1) Patterns  2)  Cause & Effect

Science & Engineering Practices:  1) Developing & Using Models   2) Constructing Explanations & Designing Solutions

  • TODAY'S OBJECTIVE:  Introduction to genetics.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:  Do offspring always look the same as their parents?
    Learning Targets:  I can...
    • identify specific genetic characteristics that I possess
    • create a double bar graph
  • ACTIVITIES:
    1. Warmup: science safety quiz
    2. Genetic traits inventory
    3. Graph class results
RESOURCES:  All resources for today are on Google Classroom

HOMEWORK: If you did not finish the traits inventory or the graph during class, finish them for homework.
